Multiplicity of Characters in Minor Character
New Saloon’s version of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya uses multiple people performing the same roles at the same time to create multiple interpretations of Vanya t the same moment. When Astrov shows Yelena his drawings of the forests and the animals that have been depleting over time, for example, there are three different actors giving the presentation at the same time. One actor holds a physical book, another actor displays an overhead projector with transparencies, and a third holds an iPad. Each of the Astrovs speaks from a different translation, ranging from the oldest translation to newest based on the age of the technology they wield. Portray the scene this way makes the character of Astrov both more easily understood and more complex. Having three actors play the scene in three different ways, makes Astrov into an unexpectedly timeless andcomplicated character.
Another moment when multiple actors play the same role is when seven of the eight performers are playAstrov alongside Yelena. All these Astrovs against one Yelena draws attention to the power that Astrov has over Yelena in this moment and to the helplessness that Yelena feels against the force of Astrov.
